Marking Previous Work

In order to find out what makes a successful or unsuccessful film opening, I chose to look at three different film openings on YouTube that were created by other AS students. Using the mark scheme, I divided it up into six different categories, each scored out of 10. I awarded each one the marks I felt were suitable, based on the following:

Level 1: 0-2 marks - minimal creative and technical skills
Level 2: 3-4 marks - basic creative and technical skills
Level 3: 5-7 marks - proficient creative and technical skills
Level 4: 8-10 marks - excellent creative and technical skills

1. Captive

Appropriate material for target audience: 8 - it displays the age certificate, and clearly shows it is directed towards young adults through the tone of the opening
Conventional and appropriate titles: 8 - they are fairly basic, but used appropriately
Sound and technical editing: 9 - a good soundtrack and pleonastic sound is used
Camera work, framing, shot types and mise en scene: 9 - a wide range of shot types
Editing for meaning: 8 - the editing was well done and not noticeable
Overall feel: 9 - it emerses the audience well, however it does feel very trailer like
Total: 51/60 - Level 4

2. Faceless

Appropriate material for target audience: 7 - it meets the typical conventions of a horror film, but it is filmed during the day
Conventional and appropriate titles: 8 - the usual angles work well
Sound and technical editing: 10 - the soundtrack is well suited to the genre, with excellent use of musical stings
Camera work, framing, shot types and mise en scene: 8 - other than the poor use of point of view shots, the camera work was overall well done
Editing for meaning: 8 - cuts were barely noticeable
Overall feel: 7 - the overall feel is let down slightly by overexposure of the bad guy, removing a layer of suspense
Total: 48/60 - Level 4

3. Rivalry
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2Wh11H5rck

Appropriate material for target audience: 6 - the varying ages and styles of the three actors makes it hard to tell who the film is directed towards
Conventional and appropriate titles: 5 - they were too quick, with a poor choice of colour
Sound and technical editing: 6 - it sounds like the student has made the sound track them self which shows initiative, however it is too repetitive
Camera work, framing, shot types and miss en scene: 7 - the camera work is shaky at some points and the similar shots are used throughout
Editing for meaning: 6 - the majority of the edits are fairly basic
Overall feel: 5 - it lacks verisimilitude and is very repetitive
Total: 35/60 - Level 3
