Target Audience
Although films have an overall target audience, it is important to target a specific segment of this audience. This maximises the enjoyment gained from watching the film as it is tailored more to what they want to see.
One way of classifying audiences is through demographics. This is when data collected from a population is classified into different categories (for example, age, gender and employment status). A common way of doing this is using a lettering system from A to E, with A being upper class, B - middle class, C1 - lower middle class, C2 - skilled working class, D - working class and E - unemployed/casual workers.
Another way of profiling the population is through psychographic information. This focuses more on peoples attitudes, personality and interests, grouping them more by their likes and dislikes. Psychographics are often classified into seven different groups: mainstreamers, who seek security, aspirers that seek status, succeeders who seek control, resigned that seek survival, explorers who seek discovery, strugglers that seek escape, and reformers who seek enlightenment.

Both demographics and psychographics are useful tools when trying to establish and getting to know the intended target audience. The film Reasonable Doubt for example, would appeal to B, C1 and C2 audiences due to the line of work the main character is in. It is also aimed at young to middle aged men, as this fits the profile of Brockden, and directors often choose the main character that most similarly resembles the segment of people it is aimed towards. Psychographic wise, the film would mostly appeal to mainstreamers and succeeders, as we can tell that family holds a very high position in Brockdens life, with his attitude and decisions implying he likes the feeling of being in control.
When considering who I would aim my crime film towards, my initial thoughts are that it will be most appealing to teenagers and young men who enjoy the excitement that comes with watching criminal activity unfold. Because it will appeal to a younger audience, the class system is likely to be lower, and aimed more towards people categorised as C and D. Linking to the thrill that comes with this genre, my intended audience could be described as explorers, or maybe as succeeders. To further my understanding of my target audience, I also plan to carry out a focus group and a questionnaire, as this will hopefully confirm who to aim my film towards and what they want to see.
