Evaluation Four

Who would be the audience for your media product?

BBFC Age Rating
As a result of carrying out a focus group, questionnaire and audience feedback, I have found that rating my film an 18 (according to the bbfc guidelines) would be the most suitable. This is because I plan to include scenes in which characters are breaking the law through frequent drug use, extreme violence and general criminal activity. Although I realise this slightly restricts the size of my audience, including this is important because drug use and violence are key features of a crime film. As a result of this, my audience will be more mature, and therefore have different characteristics to the typical audience of a 15 age rated film for example. Below are character profiles on the types of people I would target my film towards:

Secondary Audience
A secondary audience is the second most important segment of people to target. As they are not a primary target, they are slightly less important, however, they still need to be considered if sales of the film want to be optimised. The secondary audience for Dichotomy would likely to be females, in the same age bracket of 18 to 30. This is because they also, will understand the culture and language presented in the film as it is ultimately aimed towards a younger audience. This is why I felt that young adult females were more likely to be closer to my secondary audience over middle aged men for example.

The Role of Psychographics
In my initial post, I felt that my film would be targeted more towards explorers and succeeders. However, I no longer think that this is the case, as succeeders would be more interested in documentaries and informative films in order to gain more knowledge from it. After all the primary data I have collected since, and after actually making the film, I think it is more appealing to explorers, aspirers and strugglers. This is because Dichotomy portrays issues such as poverty, drug abuse and corruption, therefore appealing to people who may understand these issues and want to better themselves.

The Role of Demographics
I think that age is the most important aspect of demographics for my film over gender, ethnicity and occupation. This is because of the nature of the film and how that will appeal to the younger generation. Gender would be the second most important as the audience will be influenced by the gender of the lead actor, and also the genre of the film. Stereotypically  men enjoy watching violence over women, and despite Dichotomy not being overly violent and action packed, the ideologies of crime and drugs tend to be more appealing to the male audience.
